Best Man Top Ten Tasks
Think of the best man as an integral part to the pre wedding and wedding celebration, once the ceremony has ended his job is done and he should look back with pride. So we at DesignaVenture towers have put together an all important top 10 list of best man duties, in chronological order.*
* I say chronological order however some tasks will overlap.
Planning the stag weekend
Actually if this was the a top 10, planning the stag do would be numero uno. Your groom needs a good send off from the lads and you are head of the lads and your duty is to make sure every moment of his last weekend of freedom count. Don’t leave it to chance, book your stag do with DesignaVenture, that way your stag do plans will be bullet proof.
Be available to assist with wedding plans
You may be needed to help the groom and bride with their wedding preparations including, organising transportation, hotel reservations, choosing what to wear (Groomsmen) co-ordinating with wedding vendors, even helping out with invitee lists. Don’t hide in the shadows, this is your best mate's wedding and you are a massive cog in this wedding wheel type of thing, I don’t know where I am going with this scenario but I am sure you get the picture.
If it’s a traditional wedding the Groomsmen will all have the same suits, usually only the Groom is different, so you will need to go and see a tailor who will tinker with your measurements and make that suit fit. These types of meetings are usually loads of fun packed full of banter with the pub after.
Ensure the groom looks his best and is on time
Believe it or not, you need to think that on his wedding day you are more like his Mother than his best mate, mopping his brow when needed and making sure the groom looks his very best before stepping foot in the church or the ceremony hall. If he is prone to being late, give him times 30 minutes earlier giving yourself a time cushion.
The Ring Keeper
Some of your best man jobs are infamous like arranging the stag weekend or the best man speech. Looking after the rings is also up there, so guard them with your life, make sure they are always in your inside pocket of your suit jacket and be ready to surrender them to the celebrant when requested. Don’t do what I did and get them tangled up in headphone wires, well it was the early noughties before bluetooth!
Be a witness to the marriage
This is not always the best man’s job but most of the time it is. So put away your crayons it’s time to use the big boy's pen and sign your groom's life away.
Escort the bridesmaid off the premises
Now you’ve lost your wingman, you’ll need someone or people to walk back down the aisle to the wedding party. Grab your bridesmaids and walk with them down the aisle making sure they get to the wedding party in one piece, some may have never worn high heels before!
Your photographer may need help rounding up friends & family for the all important wedding photos. So make sure you’re on hand as you should know most people and this will leave the bride, groom and family to relax.
The best man speech
The best man is usually the last speech in the proceedings, the traditional order for speeches at a wedding goes:
- Father of the Bride
- Groom
- Best Man
- Other toasts
However, anything goes these days and often both partners speak.
Don’t forget the best man speech needs to be funny, heartfelt and memorable. If you need help don’t be proud, talk to friends, witty colleagues or even use an internet speech writing service - don't mention the stag do, whatever you do!
Ensure the rest of the day and night runs smoothly
By now you’re going to be exhausted, especially after delivering that killer speech however don’t let the groom down by getting paralytic, stay on the right side of tiddly and make sure you’re on hand to help with any eventuality including tying old cans and defacing the back of the wedding car as they drive off to their honeymoon.
Oh and enjoy!
